A big tent for AI in medicine.

Pitt AI in Medicine is a student-run club at the University of Pittsburgh. We read papers together, teach each other to code, run a summer machine learning course, and do research with Pitt and UPMC faculty.

You don't need to be a Pitt student, a med student, or a programmer to join.

Research

Research is a big part of what we do. Members work with faculty at Pitt, UPMC, and other schools, in AI and well beyond it. Here's who's working on what.

What we do

Journal club

We pick a recent paper on AI in medicine and talk it through: what they built, whether it holds up, and what it would mean for patients. You don't need to have read every page to show up.

Coding workshops

Hands-on sessions from Python basics to machine learning frameworks and health-data analysis. Bring a laptop. We start from scratch.

Summer ML course

Applied Machine Learning in Medicine: 8 Friday sessions building real models on the NIH All of Us dataset, ending with your own project.

Research projects

We connect members with Pitt and UPMC faculty on projects in health records, imaging, language models, and more. Several members have published along the way.

FAQ

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Workshops start from the basics, and the summer course includes a Python and pandas crash course.

Do I have to be a Pitt student?

No. We're based at Pitt, but you don't need to be a Pitt student, or a student at all. People from other schools, clinicians, and engineers are all welcome.

When and where do you meet?

We're still setting this year's schedule. Email us and we'll send dates and rooms once they're confirmed.

Can I actually get published?

It happens. Some past course projects were published in peer-reviewed journals, and members publish with faculty at Pitt, UPMC, and elsewhere.

What data do we work with?

The summer course uses the NIH All of Us Research Program, a national dataset of health records and surveys, through its online Researcher Workbench.

How do I join?

Email etw46@pitt.edu with a line or two about yourself. That's it.
